Psychology (Bachelor of Science)

Faculty of Natural Sciences (University)

The Faculty of Natural Sciences at MSB Medical School Berlin offers a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology. The Bachelor's program in Psychology has a strong scientific and methodical focus and qualifies you for a further Master's program, especially in clinical psychology and psychotherapy.

Scientific-methodical focus

This focus gives graduates a broad spectrum of methodological knowledge in the field of research methodology, descriptive statistics and inferential statistics, as well as specific fields of application in psychological diagnostics. Furthermore, graduates are familiar with techniques of scientific work and good scientific practice and, in the context of empirical-experimental practice, have proven that they can work on scientific matters independently.

Application-oriented focus

In addition to specialist knowledge and foundational, methodological training, the Bachelor's program in Psychology also conveys application-oriented focal points: These include clinical psychology and psychotherapy, occupational- and organizational psychology, therapeutic psychology and educational psychology. A combination of these different areas ensures that the growing demands on health professionals are met.

Interdisciplinarity

The course is internationally-oriented and integrates a network with an inter-multidisciplinary structure which also cooperates with the respective fields of practice. Interdisciplinary skills are thereby trained in cross-curricular modules, such as ethics in health and medicine and medical management. This corresponds to the MSB's interdisciplinary approach.

Content and Structure

What can you expect in the Bachelor's Degree Program in psychology at the MSB Medical School Berlin?

The separate modules of the Psychology (B.Sc.) course offer a wide range of theoretical and practical content. This ensures the communication of professional skills, specific technical knowledge, comprehensive foundations of management and methodological and scientific expertise for interdisciplinary-oriented fields of work.

The Bachelor's Degree in Psychology is thus divided into 23 modules, which are assigned to the following four fields of expertise:

  1. Foundations of professional decision-making skills - Foundations in psychology.

In this area, students deal intensively with the current state of empirical research on general psychic phenomena, their biological foundations, their course of development, as well as their social and personality factors. These, in turn, form a basis for psychological diagnostics.

  2. Scientific, methodological and management skills
In addition to the psychological foundations, specific management and scientific-methodological skills are imparted in order to promote critical analysis of psychological issues and to strengthen the competitiveness of students in the labor market. Above all, this includes the areas of psychological methodology, special problems of application-oriented research, as well as basic principles of entrepreneurial and management-related activities in healthcare companies.

  3. Enhanced professional skills/fields of application.

    Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy:
In this field of application, the course is designed for future graduates with an additional Master's degree in Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy to meet the requirements for psychotherapeutic training in a policy procedure, the guidelines of which were defined by the German Psychotherapists' Conference on the basis of a joint catalogue of criteria of the German Society of Psychology (DGPs) and the Federal Chamber of Psychotherapists (BPtK) and integrated into the Bachelor's program in Psychology and the Master's program in Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy.

    Occupational- and organizational psychology:
This field of application focuses on work in companies and organizations, as well as corporate health management or advisory institutions.

    Elective subject Health Psychology:
With this module, the Bachelor's degree course in Psychology provides qualified training in key areas of health policy such as prevention, health promotion, health economics and evaluation.

    Elective subject Educational Psychology:
This subject qualifies students for activities in the field of educational counselling, in the evaluation of pedagogical programs or pedagogical-psychological diagnostics and intervention, for example in the School Psychology Service.

  4. Transprofessional decision-making skills
An important additional cross-modular focus is strengthening the personal skills of students within the modules of the respective fields of application and during the six-month internship. This also enables them to deal competently with emotional areas of conflict. This applies both to fields of activity where students come into direct contact with difficult clients (e.g. youth welfare, addiction counselling, psychosomatic/psychiatric rehabilitation clinics) as well as to the general team skills required in all areas of activity.

Preparatory study units

In the third semester, within the context of an empirical-experimental practical course, students learn to apply the foundational and methodological knowledge acquired in relation to a specific scientific issue or problem. Under the supervision of experienced researchers, this problem is independently processed, implemented, analyzed and interpreted. This gives students a profound insight into the processes of psychological research. This knowledge not only represents a key competence for almost all professional fields of psychology where empirical data are used, but is also an essential basis for a further Master's degree course in the field of psychology. The fifth semester is devoted to practice: Within the framework of an internship, students have the opportunity to professionally apply and reflect upon the skills, abilities and knowledge acquired in the previous semesters.

Career Prospects

What career prospects are available after a bachelor's degree in Psychology at the MSB Medical School Berlin?

The Bachelor's program in Psychology at the MSB provides a cross-section of the disciplines health psychology, clinical psychology and psychotherapy, educational psychology and occupational- and organizational psychology. Your Bachelor degree already provides excellent prerequisites for employment as a specialist in the areas of prevention, mentally impaired health care, or caring for the mentally ill, and/or in the fields of industrial and organizational psychology.

In addition, after successfully completing your bachelor's degree, you can begin your master's and further intensify your skills in specific areas. For example, the MSB Medical School Berlin offers a Master's program in Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy. A key aspect of the study course consists in the fact that its curriculum creates the prerequisites for supplementary psychotherapeutic training.

The curriculum of the Master's Degree in Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy, together with the curriculum of the Bachelor's Degree in Psychology at the Faculty of Natural Sciences, corresponds to the current and future minimum requirements for access to psychotherapy training. Admission to psychotherapy training is solely incumbent upon the responsible state authorities. A bachelor's degree alone does not qualify you to work as an independent psychologist.

The MSB allows for the developing labor market in these areas by reacting to social change and society’s requirements for professional training in psychology with a strongly resource-oriented concept. This means that the concepts are constantly reviewed, brought up-to-date and adapted to further changes.

During your studies you can decide which direction is right for you and count on our support along the way.
